Czech Republic commemorates 58th anniversary of 1968 occupation

Commemorations are being held across the Czech Republic to mark the 58th anniversary of the August 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.

In Olomouc, a memorial service will take place at the Red Church on August 21. Due to ongoing renovations at the Palacký University Faculty of Education, where occupation forces were stationed for over two decades, the ceremony has been relocated. Representatives from the Olomouc Region, the city, the Army of the Czech Republic, and Palacký University will lay wreaths and flowers at a memorial plaque. The historical event saw the declaration of a state of emergency in Olomouc and civilian casualties in the surrounding region.

In Brno, historical accounts recall the sudden arrival of Soviet troops, which caught many residents by surprise. The invasion aimed to halt the political reforms of the Prague Spring led by Alexander Dubček. While some nations like Romania refused to participate, troops from the Soviet Union and East Germany entered the country, significantly impacting major cities including Prague and Brno.
