Czech Republic considers mobile phone and social media bans for minors

A recent survey by NMS for Novinky reveals strong public support in the Czech Republic for restricting digital access for minors. Approximately 75 percent of respondents support a total ban on mobile phones during school lessons and breaks, while 71 percent favor prohibiting social media use for children under the age of 15.

The Czech government has unanimously supported a legislative proposal aimed at implementing a comprehensive ban on mobile phones and similar devices in kindergartens, primary schools, and lower secondary gymnasiums. If passed by Parliament, the ban is intended to take effect on September 1, 2027.

While school regulations can be adjusted locally, experts note that enforcing social media restrictions presents greater challenges due to the borderless nature of the internet. The debate is fueled by concerns over social media algorithms designed to maximize engagement through endless streams of short-form video content, which can expose children to increasingly extreme or sensationalist material.
