Czech Republic considers windfall taxes and cancels defense tender
Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová has indicated that the government is considering extraordinary taxation for certain sectors. Potential targets for these windfall taxes include the energy, arms, and banking industries. These discussions are driven by the state of public finances and geopolitical pressures, such as the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, which impacts energy prices. While windfall taxes were applied to the energy and banking sectors between 2023 and 2025, new measures remain in the discussion phase.
Separately, the Czech Ministry of Defence has canceled a tender for armored vehicles intended for ground forces. The Ministry stated that the procurement process contained unfixable errors, including a lack of risk assessments, financial analyses, and unclear economic aspects. Minister Jaromír Zůna confirmed that a new tender will be announced as soon as the technical and contractual deficiencies are addressed, asserting that the overall procurement schedule for the military remains unchanged.
