Czech Republic debates new pharmaceutical advertising regulations

A proposed amendment to the law regulating the advertising of medicines and medical devices has sparked intense political debate in the Czech Republic. The legislative change, which originated from the need to implement European rules regarding infant nutrition, has expanded to include regulations on how information about prescription drugs is disseminated.

Minister for Sport, Prevention and Health Boris Šťastný has criticized the changes, warning that they could allow pharmaceutical companies to engage in hidden promotion under the guise of educational videos or brochures endorsed by doctors. He expressed concern that companies might use patient programs as a tool for commercial outreach.

In response, David Kolář, director of the Association of the Innovative Pharmaceutical Industry (AIFP), argued that the current legislation is over 25 years old and obsolete in the digital age. He stated that the amendment provides necessary clarity and formalizes processes that already exist in the healthcare sector to assist patients with their treatment.
