Czech Republic deploys Israeli SPYDER air defense systems

The Czech Republic has officially deployed the Israeli-made SPYDER air defense system, becoming the first NATO member to adopt the technology. The delivery of all four batteries, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, was announced during the NATO Days and Czech Air Force Days event in Ostrava.

The SPYDER system is a modular, mobile solution designed to intercept short- and medium-range threats, including aircraft, drones, and precision-guided munitions. It utilizes PYTHON anti-aircraft missiles and DERBY air-to-air missiles to provide layered protection. This acquisition replaces the aging Soviet-era 2K12 KUB systems used by the 25th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

Czech Defense Minister Jaromír Zuna stated that the introduction of the system represents a “significant technological and qualitative leap” in the nation's air defense capabilities. The systems will be integrated into a broader, modern layered defense network that may eventually include drone interceptors and laser weapons. Maintenance and service activities for the systems will be conducted within the Czech Republic.
