Czech Republic digital usage trends and school phone ban debate

Recent data and public discourse in the Czech Republic highlight the deep integration of digital devices into daily life and the resulting debate over regulation. According to a STEM/MARK agency survey, mobile phones are used by nearly the entire adult population, with 57% of Czechs checking their devices immediately upon waking. Among those aged 18–29, this figure rises to 78%. While 37% of respondents admit to feeling nervous without a phone, three-quarters report being able to manage several hours without internet access or a device calmly.

The survey also indicates a trend toward digital detoxing, with nearly two-thirds of the population having intentionally attempted to limit their technology use, most of whom viewed the experience positively.

Parallel to these statistics, political discussions have emerged regarding the potential for government intervention. There are proposals to ban mobile phones in schools to prevent digital dependency, a move that has met with criticism from those who argue that education should focus on teaching responsible digital literacy and coexistence with technology rather than outright prohibition.
