Czech Republic drought concerns rise as Husinec reservoir nears depletion

The Husinec reservoir in South Bohemia has reached a critical state, with water levels approximately 7 meters below normal and the reservoir holding less than 1.5% capacity. This development follows reports that the reservoir is no longer effectively retaining water.

Miroslav Trnka, director of the CzechGlobe institute and coordinator of the InterSucho project, has emphasized that drought is a long-term strategic issue rather than an acute problem solvable through weekly operational decisions. He advocates for sustained investments in technical infrastructure, research, and forecasting.

In response to the hydrological situation, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has convened a meeting of the National Coalition for Combating Drought. Experts suggest that water management should remain an apolitical priority for the Czech Republic to ensure long-term water security.
