Czech Republic election registration concludes for municipal and Senate votes

Registration for the upcoming Czech municipal and Senate elections, scheduled for October 9–10, 2026, has concluded across various regions. In the Senate elections, 154 candidates have been admitted to compete for seats, a significant decrease from the 235 candidates seen six years ago. This decline is attributed to strategic agreements and mutual support among opposition groups.

In municipal elections, major cities have finalized their lists. Prague has registered 24 political entities and groups, with 1,060 total candidates. Brno saw an increase in registered lists compared to 2022, while cities like Opava, Liberec, and České Budějovice have also finalized their candidate numbers. In Liberec, 11 groups are competing, reflecting shifts in previous coalitions. In Cheb, six candidates will vie for a Senate seat, and in Opava, nine groups have been registered.

The elections will determine the composition of local governments and one-third of the Senate, which holds significant influence over the legislative direction of the upper chamber.
