Czech Republic electric vehicle registrations grow by one-third
The electric vehicle (EV) market in the Czech Republic is experiencing significant growth. According to data from the Center for Transport Research, new battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations increased by 32% year-on-year during the first eight months of the year. In August alone, registrations rose by 78% compared to the previous year, driven in part by the first registrations of the Škoda PEAQ model.
As of mid-2026, there are over 77,000 BEVs on Czech roads. The market share for new BEVs has reached 7%, up from 5.5% last year. Additionally, the import of used electric vehicles has surged by 68%. While EVs are gaining traction, internal combustion engines still dominate the market, with gasoline vehicles accounting for 65.2% of new registrations.
With the increasing number of EVs, authorities are emphasizing strict rules regarding charging stations. Charging spots are reserved exclusively for vehicles actively charging. Parking a combustion engine vehicle in these spots, or an electric vehicle that is not actively charging, can result in on-the-spot fines of up to 1,500 CZK and potential vehicle towing.
