Czech Republic leads in electricity sharing growth

Electricity sharing in the Czech Republic has seen significant growth, with August volumes reaching 22,998 MWh. While this represents a slight 3 percent decrease from July, it marks a year-on-year increase of over 140 percent. Total shared electricity since the system's launch two years ago has reached 183.5 GWh.

Data from the Electrical Energy Data Center (EDC) indicates that nearly 50,000 participants are now involved in the system. Although 99 percent of current production comes from solar panels, there is growing interest in integrating other sources such as wind, hydro, and energy storage to stabilize the grid.

A study by the expert group Frank Bold highlights that the Czech Republic is a European leader in electricity sharing, accounting for approximately 15 percent of the active sharing customers among the studied EU countries. Experts suggest that upcoming legislative updates, such as the 'Lex Hydrogen' amendment being prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, present an opportunity to further support this trend. Recommendations include increasing the limit of consumption and delivery points per sharing group to allow larger entities like municipalities and businesses to participate more easily.
