Czech Republic faces budget deficit and healthcare reform needs
The Czech Republic faces significant economic and structural challenges regarding its national budget and healthcare system. The 2026 state budget projects a deficit of 310 billion CZK, with total expenditures planned at 2,427.8 billion CZK against revenues of 2,117.8 billion CZK. The national debt is estimated at approximately 3,700 billion CZK, requiring annual interest payments of about 110 billion CZK.
Simultaneously, experts are calling for a fundamental shift in the healthcare sector to ensure long-term sustainability. David Šmehlík, Director General of the Czech Industrial Health Insurance Company (ČPZP), emphasized that health insurance companies must transition from passive contribution distribution to targeted investments in prevention. This strategy aims to create healthier patients, manage future capacity shortages, and reduce costs by focusing on primary care and motivating individuals—particularly those who currently avoid preventive check-ups—to take an active role in their health management.
