Czech Republic faces demographic and family welfare challenges

The Czech Republic is facing significant demographic and social challenges regarding family life and child welfare. Economically, record-low birth rates are being driven by rising living costs. While the state provides a parental allowance of 350,000 CZK for children born from January 1, 2024, many families find this insufficient to cover the increasing costs of housing, food, energy, and childcare, especially during periods when household income drops due to one parent reducing work hours.

Simultaneously, there is a growing demand for psychological support for families. The Parenting Helpline reported a 24% increase in inquiries last year, with a 51.5% surge in topics related to divorce and family breakdowns. Parents are increasingly seeking help for children's mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, self-harm, and behavioral disorders. Experts note that the ‘sandwich generation’—parents caring for young children while also supporting aging parents—and the rise of patchwork families are complicating the ability to provide stable care and access to necessary psychological and psychiatric services.
