Czech Republic faces record heat and labor disputes

A significant heatwave is currently impacting the Czech Republic, with temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius in some regions. Meteorologists report that record-breaking temperatures have been recorded across numerous stations, including tropical nights that prevent physical recovery. Experts note that high heat can reduce work performance by up to 25% and increase the risk of workplace accidents.

While Czech labor law requires employers to provide drinking water and safety breaks when temperature limits are exceeded, it does not mandate a reduction in working hours. Discussion has emerged regarding potential legislative changes, such as shifting work to early morning hours or implementing mandatory breaks, similar to models used in Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Separately, Czech Railways (ČD) has proposed a new collective agreement that has faced opposition from unions. The proposal includes wage increases, particularly for train drivers, but also suggests extending weekly working hours and replacing traditional conditioning stays with financial contributions. Unions have criticized the plan, specifically objecting to a proposed two-year contract term which they argue limits the ability to react to inflation and economic changes.
