Czech Republic faces shortage of 100,000 workers

The Czech Republic is experiencing a growing demand for foreign labor to fill approximately 100,000 job vacancies amid a 5% unemployment rate. According to data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSU), the country is home to over 1.5 million foreigners, representing nearly 12% of the total population.

The influx of migrants has been significantly driven by the war in Ukraine, which has resulted in 613,000 Ukrainians settling in the country. Over 80% of Ukrainian adults in the region are currently employed. Other notable resident groups include approximately 125,000 Slovaks and over 15,000 Filipinos, who are particularly active in the healthcare and logistics sectors.

To address shortages in construction, industry, and healthcare, Vice Prime Minister Karel Havlíček has advocated for easier access to permanent residency for integrated individuals. The government is also exploring labor recruitment from countries including India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Moldova, Georgia, and Kazakhstan.
