Czech Republic: Large stores to close on October 28 holiday
In observance of the founding of the independent Czechoslovak state, large retail stores in the Czech Republic will be closed on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Under retail opening hour laws, establishments with a sales area exceeding 200 square meters are required to close on this public holiday.
Major supermarket and hypermarket chains, including Kaufland, Albert, Lidl, Billa, Penny Market, Tesco, and Globus, will be closed. However, Makro is expected to remain open as it is classified as a wholesaler and is not subject to these specific retail restrictions.
Exceptions to the closure include smaller shops with a sales area of 200 square meters or less, pharmacies, gas stations, and stores located within medical facilities. Additionally, certain retail outlets at airports, railway stations, and bus stations may remain open. Customers are advised to complete major shopping by Tuesday, October 27, to avoid inconvenience.
