Germany faces holiday-related traffic surges and regional closures

The Assumption Day holiday on August 15 is creating varied regional impacts across Germany. Due to Bavarian holiday laws, the day is a public holiday only in municipalities where the Catholic population exceeds the Protestant population. In northern Bavaria and cities like Nuremberg, Erlangen, and Fürth, shops remain open as it is a regular working day.

This holiday, combined with the end of school vacations in several German states and the Italian Ferragosto, is contributing to a significant wave of return travel. Heavy traffic and congestion are expected on major motorways heading north and toward the coasts. Significant delays are also anticipated on transit routes in Austria, particularly on the Brenner Autobahn.

In terms of tourism trends, travelers are increasingly looking toward neighboring countries for value. An analysis indicates that the Czech Republic offers the best price-performance ratio for German travelers, followed by Denmark, Belgium, and Austria. Poland is also noted for lower costs in accommodation and dining compared to German levels.
