Czech Republic mushroom season begins amid invasive species concerns

The mushroom harvesting season has begun in the Czech Republic following a period of drought and heat. Recent rainfall has improved soil moisture, particularly in mountainous and sub-mountainous regions, leading to a significant increase in mushroom growth.

While foragers are finding abundant yields, mycologists have raised concerns regarding the arrival of the invasive slender-stemmed mushroom (hřib štíhlotřenný). Originating from North America and having spread through the Baltics, Poland, and Germany, this edible species has been confirmed in the Czech Republic, specifically noted in the Lusatian Mountains.

Experts, including mycologist Tereza Tejklová, warn that while the mushroom is edible and tasty, its invasive potential could disrupt the natural ecological balance. There are concerns it may displace native species that share similar habitats, such as certain pine-dependent mushrooms.
