Czech Republic observes Dušičky tradition of honoring the deceased

In the Czech Republic, the tradition of Dušičky, or ‘Day of the Souls,’ is observed annually in early November. Coinciding with the Christian All Souls' Day on November 2, the custom involves families visiting cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, place autumn flowers, and light thousands of candles in memory of deceased loved ones.

Unlike the more festive Day of the Dead celebrated in Mexico, Dušičky is characterized by a more sober, intimate, and silent atmosphere. Cemeteries such as Olšany and Vyšehrad in Prague, as well as ossuaries in Kutná Hora and Brno, become significant sites for this communal act of remembrance. The tradition remains a deeply held cultural practice in the country, maintaining its importance as a way to honor memory and roots even within a largely secularized society.
