Czech Republic plans introduction of dynamic network tariffs
The Czech Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ) has announced plans to introduce dynamic network tariffs, potentially starting in January 2028. This initiative aims to incentivize consumers to shift electricity usage away from peak morning and evening hours to periods of surplus, such as when solar power production is high.
In the initial phase, the tariffs would primarily target large-scale energy consumers, including heating plants using electric boilers and owners of large standalone battery storage systems. Households and small consumers could opt into the system voluntarily, provided they have modern smart meters installed.
According to a study by Frank Bold analyzing implementations in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland, dynamic tariffs have successfully reduced peak consumption by 7% in the Netherlands and 8% in Spain. Proponents suggest these price signals can reduce the need for massive future investments in energy infrastructure by managing grid load more effectively.
