Czech Republic proposes criminalizing stadium pyrotechnics

Czech authorities are moving to reclassify the use of pyrotechnics and face coverings at sporting events from misdemeanors to criminal offenses. The proposed 'Smart Stadiums Act' aims to provide clubs with stronger tools to enforce security, with the Minister of Sport intending to present the draft to Parliament in September.

Football fan groups across the country have united in opposition to the proposal. Supporters argue that criminal law should be a last resort and should not be used to regulate specific subcultures. They warn that such measures could set a precedent for broader social repression and have called on club managements to resist the new regulations.

In a related development, police in Ostrava have charged three adults and one juvenile for a dangerous pyrotechnics incident that occurred last April. The incident, which took place near a railway station during a crowd of approximately 1,000 fans, resulted in injuries to five people. The suspects face charges of public endangerment through negligence and could face up to five years in prison.
