Czech Republic receives Spyder anti-aircraft batteries from Israel

The Czech Republic has received four Spyder anti-aircraft missile batteries purchased from Israel, marking a significant technological upgrade for the nation's ground-based air defense. These systems are intended to replace the outdated KUB systems, which date back to the 1960s. The Spyder systems offer a wider range of engagement, greater distance, and the ability to track and destroy multiple targets simultaneously.

Army spokesperson Zdeňka Sobarňová Košvancová clarified that these four batteries are not intended to protect the entire Czech territory. Instead, they are designed to protect specific objects, areas, and deployed military forces through mobile deployment based on defense priorities. Full implementation, including military testing, is expected to be completed by 2027.

Security analyst Vojtěch Bahenský from Charles University noted that while the transition is a major technological leap, the four batteries represent only a minimum restoration of capabilities required prior to 2022 and are insufficient for the current security environment. The military is reportedly considering the acquisition of additional, newer-generation Spyder batteries.
