Czech Republic: Scams targeting users via premium SMS subscriptions

Many people in the Czech Republic are losing money through deceptive premium SMS subscriptions. Scammers use tactics such as fake QR codes in public spaces or paid advertisements on Google and Facebook to trick users into unknowingly activating recurring weekly or monthly payments for services like music, games, or videos.

Investigator Janek Rubeš revealed that many victims are unaware they have subscribed, often because the confirmation process is hidden in fine print or triggered by a single careless click. Some victims reported losing thousands of crowns over extended periods. Services identified in connection with these practices include Playtheque, Soundies, Soundees Music, and Appland.

While mobile operators act as payment transaction providers rather than service providers, the Czech Telecommunication Office has previously warned about cases where users are not adequately informed about subscription costs. The police are currently investigating whether these incidents constitute a criminal offense.
