Czech Republic sees surge in Lyme disease and tick‑borne illness cases

Tick activity has intensified across the Czech Republic as warm, humid weather returns, leading to a sharp rise in tick‑borne diseases. The State Health Institute recorded 11,386 cases of Lyme disease last year, an increase of 7,357 cases from the previous year and marking the third consecutive year of growth. The highest numbers were reported in the Vysočina, South Bohemian and Olomouc regions, where dense vegetation and moist conditions favor tick populations.

Experts also warn of rising risk from tick‑borne encephalitis (TBE). In the Hradec Králové region, 25 TBE cases were documented in 2025, with the first confirmed case already appearing early this season. Vaccination coverage against TBE is the lowest in the country, with only 45 % of residents receiving at least one dose and 35 % completing the full three‑dose schedule, compared to national averages of 51 % and 38 % respectively.

Health officials stress preventative measures: regular body checks after outdoors activities, proper mechanical removal of attached ticks, use of repellents, protective clothing, and vaccination where available. They caution against outdated remedies such as oil or cream, which can increase infection risk. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid long‑term complications such as chronic fatigue, neurological issues, and joint pain.
