Czech Republic: Seniors eligible for pension contribution refunds

A new amendment to the pension savings law, effective August 1, 2026, allows tens of thousands of seniors to reclaim state contributions that were revoked in 2024 during government financial consolidation efforts. The state plans to return up to 60 million CZK to eligible individuals. To receive these funds, seniors must submit a formal request by February 2027; the refund is not automatic. This has led to increased pressure on pension companies' branches and call centers.

Separately, data from the Czech Social Security Administration regarding retirement trends shows that while the majority of people retire between the ages of 62 and 64, there are notable outliers. In the previous year, 36,967 regular old-age pensions were granted, with an average age of 63. While men typically retire at age 64, women tend to retire at age 63. Some unusual cases were recorded where individuals applied for pensions as late as age 81.
