Czech Republic starts modernization of historic Cheb train station

The Czech railway infrastructure manager Správa železnic has launched a two‑year reconstruction of the Cheb train station, a protected post‑war heritage monument. The EUR 17.3 million project was awarded to Berger Bohemia and Metrostav DIZ at a bid of CZK 428 million, more than 25 % below the original estimate.

Renovation works will restore facades, interiors, historic mosaics, stained‑glass windows and the original clock, while upgrading facilities with modern restrooms, a new passenger‑information system, a rooftop solar power system, and additional parking, including a multi‑storey garage. New multifunctional spaces such as a meeting room overlooking the main hall and an observation deck on the top floor will also be created.

Funding is co‑financed by the European Union’s Just Transition Mechanism (up to EUR 6.9 million), a loan from the European Investment Bank, and the Czech State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, covering roughly 90 % of total costs. Minister of Transportation Ivan Bednárik and Správa železnic CEO Tomáš Tóth highlighted the project’s aim to blend historic value with modern services and improve energy efficiency.
