Czech Republic unveils flood risk management plans for 2028–2033

The Czech Ministry of the Environment has released proposed flood risk management plans for the 2028–2033 period. These plans aim to protect residents, municipalities, and the landscape within the Elbe, Oder, and Danube river basins.

The proposals include both general measures for municipalities in high-risk areas and specific interventions for vulnerable locations, such as riverbed modifications and the construction of protective embankments. General measures target 479 municipalities in the Elbe basin, 260 in the Danube basin, and 50 in the Oder basin. Specifically, 105 measures each have been proposed for the Elbe and Danube basins, while 11 are proposed for the Oder basin.

Minister of the Environment Igor Červený stated that the plans integrate prevention, data, and forecasting with concrete actions. He noted that approximately 3 billion CZK is currently reserved for flood protection measures through the Operational Programme Environment. The public and water users may submit comments on these proposals until the end of February 2027.
