Czech Republic vehicle fleet nears 7 million milestone
The number of passenger cars in the Czech Republic is projected to exceed 7 million this year. As of June 30, 2024, there were 6,940,271 registered vehicles, meaning the milestone is only about 60,000 cars away. This rapid growth follows a trend where the fleet increased from 6 million in 2020, representing a 51% increase since 2011.
Alongside the rising number of vehicles, the Czech Republic remains highly motorized compared to the EU average, ranking 7th in the EU with approximately 621 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. However, the vehicle fleet is also aging.
Concurrently, the cost of mandatory third-party liability insurance is rising. The average annual premium for passenger cars has reached over 4,600 CZK, an increase of nearly 1,000 CZK compared to 2022. Experts attribute these rising costs to the increasing complexity of modern vehicle technology, higher repair costs for sensors and assistance systems, and rising prices for spare parts. Additionally, police statistics show a 5% increase in accidents between January and July, with total material damage rising by over 20% compared to the previous year.
