Czech Republic vehicle fleet reaches second-oldest age in EU
The average age of the vehicle fleet in the Czech Republic has reached 16.7 years, making it the second oldest in the European Union, surpassed only by Greece. Despite rising sales of new vehicles, older cars remain prevalent on the roads.
Data from the Ministry of Transport shows that over 120,000 used vehicles were imported into the country during the first three quarters of the year, representing a ten percent increase compared to the previous year. Half of these imports are more than ten years old, with nearly every second vehicle in that group exceeding fifteen years of age.
The aging fleet raises concerns regarding technical condition, emissions, and safety, as older models often lack modern driver assistance and passive safety systems. While corporate customers drive the renewal of the fleet by replacing vehicles every four to six years, private consumers increasingly rely on the used car market for more affordable alternatives.
