Czech Republic water reservoirs face critical level drops
Water reservoirs across the Czech Republic are experiencing significant declines in water levels due to ongoing drought conditions. In the Zlín region, the Luhačovická reservoir has seen a drop of approximately 2.7 meters, while other reservoirs like Slušovice, Koryčany, and Karolinka report even steeper declines of between 4 and 5.3 meters.
Water management officials report that inflows to these reservoirs are minimal. For instance, inflows to the Luhačovická reservoir are currently at only 8 percent of the normal state. While cooler temperatures may reduce evaporation compared to summer, the situation remains serious.
In the Vltava cascade, water levels are also decreasing weekly. Hydrologists warn that the cascade is essential for maintaining the flow of the Vltava river through Prague. Without the regulated discharge from these reservoirs, the river's flow would drop significantly, potentially leading to stagnant water conditions that could allow wastewater from treatment plants to contaminate the river.
