Czech Republic winter tire regulations and safety guidelines
Authorities in the Czech Republic are reminding drivers of the legal requirements for winter tires as the colder season approaches. According to the law, vehicles must be equipped with winter tires from November 1 to March 31 whenever there is a continuous layer of snow, ice, or frost on the road, or when such conditions can be expected due to the weather.
For passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes, winter tires must be fitted on all wheels with a minimum tread depth of 4 millimeters. Heavier vehicles require a minimum tread depth of 6 millimeters, and winter tires must be fitted to all wheels on driven axles. Experts from BESIP suggest switching to winter tires when average daily temperatures reach approximately 7 degrees Celsius, as summer tire compounds harden in the cold, reducing grip.
Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 1,500 CZK. Additionally, police may prohibit further driving if the use of unsuitable tires endangers the safety or flow of traffic. Police will monitor road conditions during routine patrols, focusing on sections where improper equipment has historically led to accidents or traffic blockages.
