Czech retail shifts toward automation and heavy discount hunting

Retail trends in the Czech Republic are shifting toward increased automation and high price sensitivity. Grocery chains are rapidly expanding self-service checkout zones to improve efficiency and address labor shortages. For example, a new Kaufland location in Plzeň features more self-service stations than traditional ones, while Albert is implementing AI technology to automatically recognize produce like fruits and vegetables.

Simultaneously, Czech consumers have emerged as the most frequent discount hunters in Europe. Data from NielsenIQ and the Association of Trade and Tourism indicates that nearly 60 percent of spending on food and drugstore goods occurs during promotional sales. This behavior is driven by a deep-seated preference for lower prices, with 94 percent of Czechs actively seeking discounts and many willing to visit multiple stores to secure the best deals.
