Czech Re‑use Centres and Furniture Banks Cut Waste and Save Municipal Budgets

In the Czech town of Veselí nad Zlín, a municipal re‑use centre lets residents drop off unwanted items for free or a symbolic fee. The initiative, funded by an EU grant, diverts waste that would otherwise go to landfills and creates modest revenue for the locality. The centre, called Cirkula, has become a community hub and has already collected around 1 700 kg of material from 475 people in its first five months.

Officials say that such furniture banks can save municipalities between 500 000 and 700 000 CZK annually by reducing landfill fees, while the region averages 485 kg of municipal waste per resident. Similar facilities now operate in Prague, Liberec, Hradec Králové, Plzeň and the Central Bohemian region, contributing to broader waste‑reduction goals and financial relief for local governments.
