Czech reuse centres boost waste diversion and social aid

Reuse points in Prague 10 now let visitors donate either usable items or cash via a QR code, with proceeds earmarked for foster families, people with disabilities and households at risk of losing their homes. The initiative expands the role of reuse sites beyond environmental benefits to direct social support.

In Boskovice, the Prostředník reuse centre has quickly become a model of waste avoidance, rescuing tens of tonnes of material each month and partnering with charities such as Charita. It is part of the Czech Reuse Federation, which coordinates 42 centres and about a hundred collection points nationwide. Over the past four years the federation has saved roughly 2,500 tonnes of material and 1.2 million items that would otherwise have ended in landfills or incinerators, reducing waste, water and energy consumption, and cutting related emissions.
