Czech schools prepare for healthier dining and self-service models

Schools in the Czech Republic are moving toward new dining models to improve nutrition and reduce food waste. In Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, the Pod Skalkou elementary school is preparing to implement a Finnish-style dining system. Under this model, students will serve themselves from dispensing boxes, allowing them to choose portion sizes based on their actual hunger. This approach aims to foster independence and responsibility while significantly reducing food waste, following successful precedents in Zlín-Malenovice where waste decreased by 60 to 70 percent.

On a national level, a new Ministry of Education decree scheduled for September 2027 will mandate healthier school meals across the country. The regulations aim to replace semi-finished products and dehydrated mixes with fresh ingredients, reducing salt and sugar intake while increasing the availability of fish, legumes, and vegetables. Parents have expressed a desire for greater menu variety, more freedom of choice, and increased access to fresh vegetables. The transition also includes promoting unsweetened beverages, such as water and tea, over sugary drinks.
