Czech scientists discover patterns in space electromagnetic waves
Scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Charles University have discovered a predictable pattern in electromagnetic waves within Earth's outer radiation belt. Published in Nature Communications, the study describes these waves as “space chirping,” manifesting as sounds such as whispers, hisses, or chirps when converted to audio.
These electromagnetic waves, occurring at frequencies similar to audible sound, are caused by plasma instabilities in the thin gas of protons and electrons surrounding Earth. The research reveals that these waves follow a strict spatial and temporal distribution. For instance, while frequent waves are found over areas experiencing noon, the most intense waves typically occur shortly after midnight, with the strongest long-term averages appearing over morning regions.
Understanding these patterns is critical for protecting telecommunications and television satellites. These satellites operate in the outer radiation belt and are vulnerable to sudden increases in radiation, which can cause significant damage or destruction. The findings may allow for more accurate predictions of radiation conditions, helping to safeguard multi-billion dollar orbital infrastructure.
