Czech Senate Race: Party Leaders Jan Grolich and Aleš Gerloch Launch Campaigns

Jan Grolich, who marked his first 100 days as the head of the Christian Democratic Union (KDU‑ČSL), announced his candidacy for the Senate in the Vyškov district. He highlighted the party’s recent growth, with 239 new members and donations totaling nearly CZK 1.2 million, and noted mixed poll results. Grolich will face candidates from SPD, Přísaha and the ANO‑backed Petra Absolonová, who is supported by allies of former prime minister Andrej Babiš.

Former Charles University pro‑rector Aleš Gerloch also entered the Senate race, registering as an independent candidate on the ANO list in the Kladno constituency. Gerloch, who previously ran unsuccessfully in 2018, is known for his outspoken commentary on constitutional matters and recent criticism of the president and the Constitutional Court. Both candidates are competing in the October Senate elections that will shape the Czech upper house.
