Czech senators propose guardianship law amendment

A group of Czech senators is proposing an amendment to guardianship laws following high-profile cases of child neglect and abuse. The legislative push, supported by senators including Eva Rajchmanová and Helena Pešatová, aims to strengthen the oversight capabilities of institutions such as the Office for Social and Legal Protection of Children (OSPOD) and guardianship courts.

The initiative follows a case in the Klatovy region where a father, struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, failed to meet the physical and emotional needs of his three-year-old daughter. The child was left without adequate supervision and was reportedly used for begging to secure food. Despite the severity of the neglect, the father received a nine-month suspended sentence, a result that has prompted calls for systemic reform to ensure child safety is prioritized and that institutions intervene more effectively.
