Czech shoppers travel to Poland for fresh cucumbers

Cucumbers are at the peak of their season in late July and August, offering high water content, low calories and a range of vitamins and fiber. In the Czech Republic, many families consider buying fresh cucumbers and dill a summer tradition. Each Saturday, Czech visitors drive to the market town of Kudowa‑Zdrój in Poland, where stalls sell cucumbers of various sizes. Prices are set by size: the smallest cucumbers fetch 43‑48 CZK per kilogram, medium ones 32‑40 CZK and the largest 25‑30 CZK. Shoppers often load dozens of kilograms into their cars, also purchasing dill, onions, garlic and spices for home pickling. The market’s appeal lies in the availability of freshly harvested produce and the convenience of buying all pickling ingredients in one place.
