Czech Supreme Audit Office to Lose Police Protection
The Czech Ministry of the Interior, headed by Minister Lubomír Metnar, has drafted a proposal to withdraw the permanent police protection currently assigned to the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ). The plan would shift the security detail to the Czech National Bank and could take effect from 1 January next year. NKÚ President Miloslav Kala said he discovered the proposal only through the government’s electronic document system and was not directly briefed. He called the move an attack on the independence of the audit office and an attempt to “starve” it of resources.
Without state‑provided protection, NKÚ would have to contract private security, estimated to cost about 20 million Czech crowns annually, a burden not reflected in its new budget. The interior ministry argues the decision follows a police security analysis that rates the NKÚ building as low‑risk. Relations between Kala and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš have been reported as strained, adding a political dimension to the controversy.
