Czech Supreme Court suspends sentences for sect murder convictions

The Supreme Court of the Czech Republic has suspended the prison sentences of two women convicted of murdering the leader of a Kutná Hora sect. The women, a dentist and a retired physical education teacher, will remain free pending a decision on their appeals.

The incident occurred in October 2022, when the women killed a 50-year-old man in a Prague apartment. The victim had voluntarily taken a sedative, after which the dentist used a scalpel and injected an anesthetic, leading to acute poisoning. The women argued they were acting on the man's wishes to end his life and claimed they were being manipulated by him.

While the Prague Municipal and High Courts had previously issued final verdicts, the Supreme Court determined that the merits of their appeals could not be ruled out. This suspension is considered an exceptional measure in murder cases. The final outcome of the appellate proceedings remains to be determined.
