Czech survey finds optical fiber in one‑third of households, with stark city‑village gap
A May 2026 survey commissioned by the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) and carried out by the research agency MEDIAN interviewed 1,535 households, self‑employed persons and small firms. The study shows that 34 % of Czech homes already have access to an optical‑fiber network, a share that is much higher in larger cities and drops sharply in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 residents, where wireless technologies dominate.
The fixed‑line broadband market remains highly fragmented: about 40 % of customers use a variety of smaller or regional providers, while the remaining 60 % are split among the three major operators O2, T‑Mobile and Vodafone, which dominate cities with over 100,000 inhabitants. One‑third of respondents do not know whether fiber is available at their address. Of those without fiber, 17 % would switch to a provider offering it, 20 % would consider switching for a significantly faster connection, and 27 % for a substantially lower price. Price sensitivity is moderate; 45 % of customers receive some form of discount, and a 10 % price increase would not prompt a change for 39 % of respondents. The average monthly price reported falls between 301 and 400 Czech crowns.
