Czech towns introduce waste‑reduction hubs

The city of Přerov opened a new "re‑use point" where residents can deposit items such as toys, kitchenware, skis and fishing rods for others to collect. The initiative aims to cut municipal waste‑handling costs, which average about 1,700 CZK per resident, and keep waste fees stable. The pilot phase tests public interest, with items categorized into price bands from 20 to 200 CZK. Items that remain unclaimed are later disposed of as waste.

In the town of Žatec, officials launched a community composting pilot to separate plant waste. Households can borrow composters for residential blocks or garden plots, provided they appoint a manager and secure participation from at least ten households. Large three‑chamber composters of 6,000 L capacity are also available for garden areas. If successful, the scheme could become a regular part of Žatec’s waste‑management system.
