Czech towns launch major cinema‑center redevelopment projects

Vrchlabí will invest 300 million CZK to build a new cultural campus that brings together a municipal theatre, a basic art school and supporting facilities on a single site. The project, announced by Mayor Jan Sobotka, will replace the century‑old city cinema and is slated to begin construction in autumn, with an expected duration of two to three years.

In Nový Město nad Moravou, entrepreneur Jan Hendrych is converting the town’s former cinema into a hybrid cinema‑hotel, adding a bar and guest rooms. He described the venture as unprecedented in the Czech Republic, noting, “Nevěděl jsem, do čeho jdu, tak jsem se toho nebál.” The renovation required extensive upgrades to utilities and exceeded the original budget by a factor of twelve.

Both initiatives reflect a broader trend of regional Czech municipalities investing in cultural infrastructure to revive local venues and attract visitors.
