Czech towns modernize wastewater treatment facilities

The municipality of Sedlec has begun a 350,800‑CZK refurbishment of its wastewater‑treatment plant’s aeration system, replacing all 32 aeration elements that have operated since 2004. Mayor Stanislav Šindelář said the upgrade will ensure reliable biological cleaning of wastewater for years to come.

In the nearby town of Litovel, officials are testing a new odor‑reduction technology at the solar sludge dryer built with a 119‑million‑CZK grant. The city‑run pilot uses a dry‑steam device from the firm Regitas and will run for about a month, aiming to curb the smell that residents have complained about. Additional trials of electro‑osmotic pre‑drying are planned. The dryer can process up to 3,500 t of sludge annually, producing 933 t of dried fuel that will be used by Cement Hranice, reducing transport and disposal costs.
