Czech utility billing laws mandate deadlines and penalties
Under Czech law, service providers must deliver utility settlements—covering costs such as water, heating, cleaning, or elevator services—within four months of the end of the accounting period. For a standard calendar year, this deadline is typically April 30.
If a provider fails to meet this deadline, they may be subject to a penalty of 50 CZK for each day of delay, unless specific legal exceptions apply or the delay was caused by the tenant. For example, a 90-day delay could result in a penalty of 4,500 CZK.
To ensure transparency, the Ministry of Regional Development specifies that settlements must be verifiable, detailing actual costs for individual services and received advances so that tenants can confirm how any overpayments or underpayments were calculated. Once a settlement is delivered, tenants generally have 30 days to request supporting documentation or submit objections.
