Czech waterway safety sees steady accident count amid rising traffic

The number of boating accidents in the Czech Republic has remained within a long‑term range of five to thirty‑five incidents per year over the past three decades, even as water traffic increases. The State Waterway Administration (SPS) and police inspect about 1,300 vessels annually, and three‑quarters of boat operators comply with regulations, while a quarter commit violations such as missing identification marks, ignoring waterway signage, or lacking proper vessel documentation.

There are more than 71,000 licensed small‑ and recreational‑boat operators, with roughly 3,500 new licences issued each year. The post‑COVID‑19 year 2022 saw an exceptional surge of over 4,000 new licences. Police have four river‑police units (Ústí nad Labem, Prague, Nymburk, Slapy) and are intensifying checks to focus on prevention and rule compliance. The transport minister and SPS director highlighted the importance of mutual consideration among water users to maintain safety as vessels become more powerful and traffic denser.
