Czech women's volleyball faces Sweden in European Championship round of 16

The Czech women's national volleyball team faces Sweden in the round of 16 at the European Championship in Brno. The Czech team aims to overcome a recent history of close losses to the Swedes, including a 2-3 defeat in the 2024 European League final and another 2-3 loss in a recent preparatory tournament.

A central challenge for the Czech side is neutralizing Swedish star Isabelle Haak, the most productive player of the tournament's group stages. Haak recorded a massive 52 points in a single match against Croatia and has averaged 8.7 points per set. Czech captain Michaela Mlejnková noted that while the team respects Haak's performance, the national team has made significant progress since their previous encounters.

The Czech team enters the match with a strengthened world ranking of 13th, while Sweden is ranked 19th. The Czech strategy relies on a distributed attack and strong blocking, led by players such as Ela Koulisani and Magdaléna Jehlářová. The winner of this match will advance to the quarterfinals to face either Italy or Bulgaria.
