Vladimír Páral, influential Czech writer, dies at 94

Czech writer Vladimír Páral has died at the age of 94. He passed away in a hospital in Cheb on the night of August 10, coinciding with his 94th birthday.

Originally trained as a chemical engineer, Páral became one of the most widely read Czech prose writers of the second half of the 20th century. His work often explored themes of everyday life, human relationships, sexuality, and social routines, frequently set against the backdrop of industrial environments in Northern Bohemia. His notable works include ‘Milenci a vrazi’, ‘Mladý muž a bílá velryba’, and ‘Playgirls’.

In addition to his social realism, Páral also explored science fiction and erotic literature. He was a significant figure in the literary scene, particularly in Mariánské Lázně, where he lived for many years. His books were highly popular during the socialist era, often resulting in long queues of readers and several film adaptations.
