Czech writers clash with Culture Minister at Frankfurt Book Fair
During the Frankfurt Book Fair, where the Czech Republic is the guest of honor, tensions arose between Czech cultural representatives and Minister of Culture Ota Klempíř.
Writer Radka Denemarková responded to Klempíř’s speech, emphasizing that while ministers change, literature remains. Other writers, including Kateřina Tučková, criticized the Minister’s approach to cultural policy. Tučková expressed concerns regarding the government's potential impact on the cultural ecosystem, specifically mentioning risks to book translation funding and the danger of state policies favoring only apolitical works, which could lead to self-censorship.
Critics also pointed to the Minister's failure to address contemporary issues such as declining reading literacy and the need for stronger engagement with readers. The friction highlights a perceived disconnect between the current administration and the artistic community regarding the role of politics in culture.
