Czech zoos report multiple successful animal births
Czech zoos are reporting significant successes in animal breeding and conservation efforts. At the Plzeň Zoo, several new births have been recorded, including various species of mongooses, lemurs, agoutis, and dwarf marmosets. Notably, the zoo welcomed the first fox mongoose offspring since the resumption of their breeding program. Additionally, the zoo celebrated the birth of a white-nosed coati and a European bison calf named Onzu, bringing the local bison herd to five members.
In Prague, the Prague Zoo is preparing for World Elephant Day while monitoring the health of its Indian elephant herd. Two females, Janita and Tamara, are expected to give birth in early 2025. The zoo continues to focus on creating social structures for elephants that mimic their natural environments, a practice enhanced by the opening of the Elephant Valley in 2012. Recent management changes include the arrival of a male elephant, Maxim, from Ostrava to Prague.
